Calling Terrorism, Terrorism

Today is a sad day for all Canadians after a lone terrorist carried out an assault on Quebec's Islamic Cultural Centre and Mosque in Ste. Foy, outside of Quebec City. Six innocent men praying at evening prayer were executed by gun fire and eight others were gravely wounded with five struggling to stay alive. For a change the Canadian government identified this horrific act as what it was--terrorism.

The Trudeau government brought federal resources to bear rapidly in this case. While much is still not known including motive, it is important not to jump to conclusions. This is a very polarizing time and one that is upsetting for all Canadians. What we do know is that it is important to take steps to protect Canada's faith communities. Our Coptic Christians, Jewish Synagogues and Muslim Mosques have been under threat now for several years, but now the threat appears to be increasing. The government does not need to overreact but it needs to be clear with Canadians what the threats are and be honest about the need to remain vigilant in the face of changing times. Actually using the term "terrorism" and admitting the obvious is a start.
